Dermatologists prescribe products to their patients all day long, but have you ever wondered which ones they personally use? Welcome to Derm Diaries, a series where dermatologists share their skin woes—and solutions—so you can steal secrets from their skincare routines.
For Joyce Teng, MD, Head of Pediatric Dermatology at Stanford University and the Chief Scientific Officer of Evereden, going into the medical field was always a desire for her. But it was her second child, Claudia, who gave her a passion for dermatology. "While I was still in my medical training, she had very severe eczema as a baby, and it was very challenging," explains Dr. Teng. "I was losing sleep because she would be up all night upset and scratching. Seeing how deeply it affected her quality of life made me see firsthand the importance of healthy skin." Not only did Dr. Teng go on to pursue dermatology because of this experience but more specifically, pediatric dermatology.
Though Dr. Teng doesn't have eczema like her daughter, she's developed the same healthy skin habits that she wanted her daughter to possess: be gentle and never forget to apply your moisturizer and sunscreen. Because, as Dr. Teng reminds us, the skin is our largest organ and the first line of defense as a barrier to the outside world. Keep reading to see what else she uses on her sensitive, sunburn-prone skin.
Mornings are for gentle cleansers.
"In the morning I like to use a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil’s Gentle Skin Cleanser. This is a creamy texture that does not foam, and its formula is very much no frills - to simply cleanse and leave your skin prepped for the next steps of your routine."
She uses a baby cream as her daily moisturizer.
"For my daily moisturizer, I use Evereden’s Nourishing Baby Face Cream. It’s a good emollient for baby’s fragile skin with a high concentration of sunflower seed oil, which is one of my favorite natural ingredients because of its proven ability to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier. This moisturizer was designed for babies, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for adults too, particularly those with sensitive skin. My whole family uses it from my adolescent daughter to my young adult children, to me."
She opts for a mineral based sunscreen.
"As a last step, I never leave home without applying SPF. I prefer an all-mineral option using only titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, and lately I have been enjoying the SPF 50 Light Fluid Sunscreen from La Roche Posay for offering a good lightweight, high protection option."
She prefers a foaming cleanser at night.
"In the evening I change my routine slightly to use a foaming cleanser to better remove the day’s dirt, oil, pollution and any makeup. I use Cerave’s Cream to Foam Cleanser, which I still find to be gentle and non-drying, while being an efficient cleanser."
She uses an eczema cream as a spot treatment.
"This is also the routine that I share with my now young adult daughter, who has also been a lifelong sufferer of eczema. I encourage her to apply Evereden’s new Healing Eczema Treatment to any flareups she still gets, particularly around her hands and arms. I even use it myself when I find any patches of extra dry or irritated skin, as I find its soothing barley and anti-inflammatory quercetin ingredients are well suited to addressing my occasional skin sensitivities."
